Emergency Room

The Emergency Department (DEA)

of the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital

The Emergency Room – Level I Emergency Department of the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital is a service offered by the Regional Healthcare System, free of charge for citizens. The DEA is part of the time-dependent network of the Lazio Region to provide timely treatment for a broad spectrum of illnesses and injuries.

It covers an area of 2100 square metres, fully integrated into the University Hospital building and built following the most up-to-date organisational, technological and triage models. The design is modern and functional in order to ensure maximum comfort and the least possible displacement of patients, thanks to a carefully managed patient-flow process according to emergency levels with one area dedicated to high priority and a separate area for medium-low priority.

The Emergency Department operates 24 hours a day; a dedicated operating theatre is located in the immediate vicinity of the high priority area, as well as the Interventional Radiology and the cardiovascular Haemodynamics units. It also has a dedicated Diagnostic Imaging service with a 300-layer high-performance CT scan, 8 beds in the Intensive Short Observation Unit (OBI) for prolonged observation, no longer than 44 hours after being admitted, and 12 beds in the Holding Area for those waiting to be admitted into the hospital or to be transferred to other facilities in case of lack of available beds. In addition, a “fever pathway” alongside the perimeter of the main building, makes it possible to safely manage access to the Emergency Room, reducing the risks of COVID-19 to a minimum.

The Emergency department is also equipped with a 40-space parking lot (including spaces reserved for disabled people and pregnant women) and a helipad. Soundproof phone booths for phone calls, TV and information monitors, Wi-Fi, charging stations and a refreshment area make the waiting room a welcoming and reassuring environment.

The facility was designed to meet the health needs of the population in accordance with an organisational model, which is constantly monitored and updated, and with assistance methods tailored to each individual patient. A model that listens and welcomes, communicates and takes charge, assists and cares, guaranteeing high quality standards and respecting the specific nature of each person. In order to reduce waiting times, FAST – TRACK ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology care paths can be activated during the triage reception phase: patients do not remain in the Emergency Department but are directed directly to the specialist outpatient clinic relevant to their clinical problem. This makes it possible to optimise resources for the most complex cases and to simplify access to treatment for less serious patients.

The Emergency Department of the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital is made up of two Complex Operative Units: Emergency Room and Emergency Medicine. The Emergency Room Radiology unit and the Orthopaedic unit fall under the Emergency Department functions. The Complex Operative Unit of Anesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain Management, with a dedicated 24-hour doctor, and the Surgery Centre support the Department of Emergency’s activities.
