Neurodevelopmental disorders Service


The Service for Neurodevelopmental Disorders offers an interdisciplinary approach to diseases such as

  • autism and pervasive developmental disorders
  • learning disabilities (dyslexia, dysorthography, dysgraphia, dyscalculia)
  • language disorders
  • attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), for which it is the Regional Reference Centre
  • cognitive retardation
  • gender identity disorders
  • oppositional-provocative and conduct disorder
  • neurogenetic syndromes
  • mood disorders
  • Sleep disorders
  • schizophrenia and other adolescent-onset psychotic disorders
  • eating disorders
  • personality disorders

The team is composed of neuropsychiatrists, psychologists, geneticists and biologists, who collaborate with speech therapists and paediatricians.

The Service for neurodevelopmental disorders operates in agreement with the National Health Service. It provides clinical assistance at the University Campus Bio-Medico Hospital (clinics in via Alvaro del Portillo, 200). In particular, it offers the following services:

  • first diagnosis and follow-up
  • clinical, instrumental and laboratory examinations for cases already diagnose
  • psychodiagnostic assessments and neuropsychological tests for the evaluation of executive functions and for the administration of tests at the intellectual level, projective tests and diagnostic tests for the framing of different neuropsychiatric disorders

Research fields

The research activity is carried out in the laboratories of the University Campus Bio-Medico Hospital in Rome. The service for neurodevelopment disorders also participates in the European project EU-AIMS. The team of Dr. Roberto Sacco is engaged, in particular, in the following fields of study:

  • Development of genetic methods of diagnosis and therapy of autism
  • Detection of biomarkers of autistic disorder
  • Gene-environment interactions in childhood neuropsychiatric disorders
