Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and chronic constipation are functional bowel disorders that affect a high percentage of the world's population.
Diagnosis is based on symptoms such as abdominal pain and altered bowel movements. It can greatly affect the quality of life of the sufferer. Factors involved in the onset of these diseases include the composition of microorganisms in the intestine (the intestinal microbiome), diet and stress. Appropriate modulation of gut microbiota through proper diet and the use of individually selected food supplements may be an effective approach, in combination with traditional therapies, to control the hallmark symptoms of these disorders.
In collaboration with the Check-up Centre, the Functional Gastroenterology and Microbiota Services of the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital headed by Prof. Michele Guarino has activated the “microbiota check-up”, a dedicated pathway providing:
- specialist gastroenterological examination with pathway planning
- intestinal microbiota analysis on multiple faecal samples
- gastroenterological check-up with nutritional counselling
The microbiota check-up can be carried out on the advice of the gastroenterologist after a specialist examination with clinical evaluation and exclusion of other diseases.
