Metabolic diseases

Unit

The Metabolic Diseases Unit, part of the Endocrinology and Diabetology Unit, deals mainly with endocrine diseases, obesity and metabolic syndrome, as well as with diabetes.

The specialists perform ultrasound and thyroid aspirate needle for the clinical framing of diseases related to the dysfunction of this gland. They also deal with the clinical classification of osteo-metabolic, general endocrinological and female reproductive disorders.

About prevention and treatment of obesity and the metabolic syndrome, the Metabolic Diseases Unit operates in a broad vision of well-being through the agreement with spa facilities and wellness centres to accompany the patient to a complete metabolic recovery, integrating the pharmacological approach with a balanced diet and appropriate physical activity.

Finally, the Unit carries out the diagnosis and treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and carries out programmes to prevent this disease. It also deals with chronic diabetes complications with the application of an insulin pump, continuous glycaemic monitoring, performing tests for the assessment of autonomic neuropathy and the organisation of therapeutic education courses and individual or group counselling.

The services are provided in agreement with the National Health Service and privately, and the activity takes place both on an outpatient and day-hospital basis.
