Outpatient clinic for the reeducation of the pelvic floor

The outpatient clinic for the reeducation of the pelvic floor is for women who suffer from urinary incontinence or retention or who have a urogenital prolapse in early stage. Generally, these are consequences associated with pregnancy or menopause.

In the first urogynecological visit, it is made a diagnosis and according to the severity of the symptom the physician can decide whether to choose rehabilitation or surgery.

Reeducation provides for utilization of non-invasive techniques. The three methods applied are:

  • Physiokinetic Therapy: to strengthen the muscles of the perineum through specific exercises to be performed initially with a therapist and then, after a training phase, at home.
  • Biofeedback therapy: a technique for the reeducation of physiological activities normally unconscious, carried through audible and visual signals.
  • Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES): with passive instruments through intra-vaginal electrodes connected to external stimulators.

In addition to improve the medical case, that in 80-85% of cases allows to avoid surgery, techniques for the reeducation of the pelvic floor can be used for prevention, especially in pregnancy or pre-menopause.

The coordinator of the outpatient clinic is Dr. Marzio Angelo Zullo, from the Single Speciality Unit of Short-term Hospitalization Surgery.
