Urology Unit

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES

The Urology Unit treats diseases of the urinary tract and male genitalia. It specialises in reconstructive vesical surgery, urethral reconstruction and the treatment of litheases using micro-invasive and laser techniques.

 

It favours conservative laparoscopic minimally-invasive surgery for dealing with kidney tumours and prosthetic implants for the treatment of impotence and incontinence.

 

The Unit also runs the following generic and specialist outpatient clinics:

  • General Urology Clinic for initial medical examinations
  • Oncological Urology Clinic (in collaboration with the Medical Oncology Unit)
  • Clinic for the treatment of Non-Infiltrating Vesical Neoplasies
  • Neurological and Male Incontinence Clinic
  • Urodynamics Clinic
  • Prostate Clinic

RESEARCH AREAS

  • Urological Oncology: partial nephrectomy, definition of the pattern, Janus project, definition of the role of extended lymphadenectomy in carcinoma of the bladder
  • Correlation between MRI spectroscopy and histopathology in prostate tumours
  • Preventive surgery in the treatment of Multiple sclerosis and the neurological bladder
  • Tissue engineering applied to the regeneration of bladder tissues
