Radiotherapy Unit

The Radiotherapy Unit diagnoses and treats patients affected by all types of tumour. It has two Radiotherapy Centres, one based at the University Hospital in Trigoria and the other in via Longoni (Prenestina - Rome). Both have a multidisciplinary team of doctors, physicists, radiographers and clinical nurse specialists.

The Unit is able to effect integrated therapeutic pathways tailored to the stage of development of the neoplasia, also providing radiotherapy, chemotherapy or a combination of the two. Radiotherapy may be three-dimensional, intensity modulated, stereotactic, or brachytherapy. With the latter two methods in particular, the tumour can be targeted with extreme precision by a beam of photons. This means the intensity of the radiation can be increased, and hence its efficacy, without targeting adjacent healthy organs.

Integrated therapy includes chemotherapy combined with biologic drugs. These have the same aim as traditional therapies, i.e. to target tumours with the maximum efficacy, whilst limiting the side effects on the body compared to traditional therapies.

The Unit excels in the treatment of tumours of the lung, pancreas, colon-rectal, prostate, and cervicofacial area. Partial Breast Irradiation is used for the treatment of breast pathologies, whilst Prone Breast Radiotherapy, with its more extensive radiation, is given in the case of more advanced tumours, in order to target the tumour and safeguard lungs and heart.

  • Combined radio-chemotherapy techniques in combination with target therapies in the treatment of pancreatic tumours
  • The use of stereotactic radiotherapy, chemotherapy, 3-dimensional radiotherapy and biological therapies in the treatment of brain tumours
  • Treatment of primitive and recidivist prostate cancer following surgery and/or radiotherapy
  • Treatment of breast cancer
  • Integrated radio-chemotherapy techniques with or without biological therapies in the treatment of lung, gynaecological, colorectal, and chest-neck neoplasies.
