Ophthalmology Unit

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES

The Ophthalmology Operational Unit (UOC) carries out clinical and surgical treatment for ocular surfaces and retinal diseases by skilled and trained personnel in the various branches of ophthalmology.

 

The Unit has several specialized services on particular days of the week:

  • Cornea and Ocular Surface Diseases clinic (Monday and Thursday)
    • Tear film Changes (dry eye disease) and diagnostic exams (Schirmer Test, B.U.T., Vital dyes, Impression Cytology, Tear film evaluation).
    • Infectious, allergic, toxic conjunctivitis and related diagnostics (Vital dyes, conjunctival scraping, impression cytology, conjunctival biopsy).
    • Corneal, non-infectious and neurotrophic, ulcers and related diagnostics (corneal scraping and swab, amniotic membrane graft, contact lens applications).
  • Retinal Diseases and Maculopathies clinic (Wednesday)
    • retinal, OCT and laser treatment.
  • Comprehensive Ophthalmology clinic
    • cataracts, glaucoma, other ocular pathologies and related diagnostic tests.

RESEARCH AREAS

The research activities of the Ophthalmology Unit has been significant since many years, being among the top teams in the national landscape. An advanced research lab is part of this area, allowing to mix the most innovative techniques and discoveries of basic research in daily clinical activity. The research areas are developed in various fields:

  • Pathogenesis of allergic eye diseases
  • Pathogenesis and therapy of dry-eye disease
  • Corneal transplants, indications and treatment
  • Immunological Management of Graft-Versus Host Disease (GVHD) and related complications
  • Neuromediators and Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) at ocular surface
  • Endocrine System effect at ocular surface

CLINICAL AND RESEARCH COLLABORATION

The clinical and chirurgic team has a very pronounced international background that still offers educational, clinical and research exchanges with the major national and international institutions such as:
