Neurology Unit


The Neurology Unit deals with the study and treatment of pathologies of the central and peripheral nervous systems and muscular diseases. Its health services are delivered through regular inpatient admissions, outpatient clinics and day hospital. It specialises in the treatment of the principal neurological pathologies in adults, such as:

  • Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia
  • Cerebrovascular diseases (stroke, transient ischaemic attack)
  • Muscular diseases and peripheral neuropathy
  • Epilepsies
  • Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders
  • Headaches
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Myelopathies

The Neurology Unit has achieved an international reputation thanks to wide experience in:

  • The diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular diseases;
  • Diagnosis and treatment of dementia;
  • Clinical neurophysiology with the possibility of undergoing a full range of instrumental examinations useful in the diagnosis of epilepsy, myeloradiculopathy, neuro-muscular disorders and motor neurone disease (standard electroencephalography, 24 hr Holter monitor, EEG with high definition EEG-TMS, polysomnography, evoked potentials, electromyographic and electroneurographic examinations, study of reflexes, transcranial magnetic stimulation);
  • Neurosonology with complete colour doppler ultrasound of the cerebral vessels, stimulation test for cerebral hemodynamics and non-invasive testing for the diagnosis of a patent foramen ovale;
  • EMG-guided infiltrative Botox treatment for the following diseases: spasticity (in optical rehabilitation), cranial dystonia (blepharospasm and hemispasm), and cervical, axial and limb dystonia;
  • diagnosis and treatment of primary and secondary headaches.

  • Integrated functional neuroimaging to assess the phenomenon of brain plasticity and recovery mechanisms following neurological damage;
  • Neurophysiological markers of neuro and genetic/biological images for early (pre-clinical) diagnosis of the various forms of dementia;
  • Development of methods of transcranial brain stimulation in recovering patients, especially those left with a neurological deficit following a cerebral stroke;
  • Transcranial neuro-modulation in patients presenting with chronic headaches and migraines;
  • Metabolism of metals in neuro-degeneration processes;
  • Treatment of mild or moderate Alzheimer’s Disease;
  • Lifehand: protocol for the acute implant and experimentation of cybernetic hand prosthesis;
  • Study of excitability and cortical connectivity in neurological diseases;
  • Ultrasound study of cerebral hemodynamics.
