Internal Medicine Unit

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES

The Internal Medicine Unit offers first-level diagnosis and therapy to patients presenting with acute medical pathologies or who are in a critical condition.

 

It specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of:

  • Cardiocirculatory and cerebrovascular diseases (arterial hypertension, arrhythmia, myocardial ischaemia, acute and chronic cardiac insufficiency, atherosclerosis)
  • Infective diseases (sepsis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, abscesses and tuberculosis)
  • Respiratory diseases (chronic obstructive bronchitis, asthma, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome)
  • Metabolic and endocrine diseases (diabetes, thyroid disorders, obesity)
  • Gastrointestinal diseases (ulcers, acute and chronic hepatitis, gastritis and peptic ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, etc)
  • Renal diseases (acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, hypertensive or diabetic nephropathy, etc)
  • Osteoarticular diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, mixed connective tissue disease)


Working in collaboration with the Radiotherapy, the Unit also supports patients with metabolic, renal, cardiac or infective complications deriving from radio-chemotherapy.

RESEARCH AREAS

  • Prevention of nephropathy (renal failure) caused by radiotherapy
  • Incidence of actinic pneumonitis against infectious pneumonia in patients undergoing radiotherapy
  • Efficacy of anticoagulant therapies in patients with arrythmia and for the prognosis of patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis
  • Pathological vertebral fractures in patients with negative anamnesis of osteoporosis
