Hepatology Unit

The Hepatology Unit, of internal medicine extraction, consists of an in- and out-patient clinic, and of a Day-Hospital for the treatment of liver diseases. The Hepatology Unit works in collaboration with the Medical OncologyDiagnostic Imaging and General Surgery Units and is responsible for the Interdisciplinary Unit for the Cure of Hepatocarcinomas (UICE). The Unit is in charge of diagnosing and curing patients with primary hepatic malignancy (hepatocarcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma).

Moreover, within the unit’s ultrasound and elastometry clinic, which is managed by personal who are experts in liver diagnosis via ultrasound, ARFI elastography is carried out for non-invasive hepatic fibrosis evaluation, as well as liver ultrasound (with or without contrast), ultrasound-guided liver biopsy and other interventional procedures.

The Clinic’s main activities are:

  • Diagnosis, follow-up and treatment of acute and chronic viral hepatitis.
  • Diagnosis, follow-up and treatment of metabolic hepatitis (steatohepatitis and steatosis).
  • Diagnosis, follow-up and treatment of alcoholic and autoimmune diseases, and of chronic biliary diseases.
  • Day hospital for follow up of liver cirrhosis complications.
  • Treatment of Liver cancer.
  • Ultrasound and elastometry.

The Hepatology Unit is engaged in research programs focused mainly on the pathophysiology of hepatic fibrogenesis and on the hepatic and extrahepatic complications of cirrhosis:

  • Mediators of liver fibrosis.
  • Changes in respiratory function and pulmonary microcirculation during the course of liver disease.
  • Endocrine-metabolic alterations in the course of chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis.
  • Metabolism of metals and neurological abnormalities during cirrhosis.
  • Associations between fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease.
