Haematology and Stem Cell Transplant Unit

The Haematology and Stem Cell Transplant Unit is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the blood and organs that produce blood. It deals in particular with patients presenting with both tumour-related diseases (leukaemias, lymphomas and myelomas) and non-tumour-related diseases (anaemias, thrombocytopenias, acquired coagulopathies, etc.) and specializes in the prevention of multiple miscarriages due to haematological reasons. The Haematology Unit is accreditated by JACIE (Joint Accreditation Committee - ISCT & EBMT)  that guarantee international standards of quality and safety for stem cell transplats.

The Unit is part of the Rome Transplant Network (RTN) as regards haematological cancers and the care of patients eligible for autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplants. The RTN is a network of six haematological centres of excellence in Rome and carries out stem cell transplants in accordance with joint protocols that have been certified by international organizations, by the italian National Centre for Transplants and by the italian National Centre for Blood. Each centre specializes in a specific area of application of these transplants. As part of the RTN, the Haematology Unit of the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital, is in additional, and in conjunction with the Urology Unit, the only in Italy to be conducting advanced studies for the treatment of post-transplant haemorrhagic cystitis by the endoscopic application of fibrin glue.

The Unit is a centre of excellence for the treatment of myelomas, lymphomas and leukaemias, and conducts study protocols in chemotherapy, cell therapy, radiotherapy and biological therapies (stimulating the immune system to recognise and destroy leukaemic cells).

Other diseases diagnosed and treated on an inpatient, day-hospital and outpatient basis are:

  • rare lymphoproliferative diseases
  • polycythaemia vera
  • essential thrombocythaemia
  • thrombosis (congenital and acquired thrombophilias)
  • deficiency, haemolytic and microangiopathic anaemias

The Unit has a Blood Transfusion Centre.

  • National and international cooperation protocols for the treatment of leukaemias, lymphomas and myelomas
  • Treatment of haemorrhagic cystitis following haematopoietic stem cell transplants
  • Transplant procedures in patients with advanced non-haematological diseases
