General Surgery Unit

Every year, the General Surgery Unit carries out more than a thousand interventions of high and medium complexity.

It is regarded as a national reference centre for the surgical treatment of many types of malignant neoplasies, including tumours of the pancreas, the colon/rectum, the stomach, oesophagus, the thyroid and the lungs.

Every day, however, in addition to its specialist surgery program, the Unit also deals with more common pathologies: inguinal hernia, gallstones and hemorrhoids, with 30% of these interventions being carried out in a day surgery setting which means the patient is able to return home the same day.

The use of minimally-invasive techniques such as laparoscopic surgery not only ensures much greater surgical precision, it also involves a much less invasive intervention and fewer post-operative complications.

Every year the Unit carries out more than 4,500 medical examinations and runs numerous generic and specialist outpatient clinics:

  • General Surgery Clinic
  • Hepatobiliary and Pancreas Clinic
  • Digestive Function Clinic
  • Proctology and Pelvic Floor Clinic
