CLINICAL ACTIVITY

The Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Unit specializes in the treatment of major adult gastroenterological diseases. It is able to call on the assistance of expert nutritionists who contribute within the department to the dietary aspects of therapeutic programmes.

The Unit is a national reference centre for the treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux, studied using specialist examinations such as high-resolution oesophageal manometry and pH-impedancemetry.

The following are also treated by the Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Unit:

  • Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative rectocolitis)
  • Neoplastic or preneoplastic lesions of the stomach and colon
  • Coeliac disease
  • Intestinal malabsorption syndromes

The therapeutic options for chronic bowel diseases are individually tailored and involve the use of both conventional treatments (e.g. corticosteroids and immunomodulating agents) as well as biological drugs (e.g. anti-TNF-alpha, selective inhibitors of intercellular adhesion molecules).

The Unit operates the following general and specialist clinics:

  • Digestive endoscopy clinic
  • Gastroenterology clinic
  • Chronic inflammatory bowel disease clinic
  • Functional intestinal disease clinic
  • Clinical nutrition clinic
  • Breath test clinic for Helicobacter pylori, lactose intolerance and bacterial overgrowth

RESEARCH AREAS

  • Visceral sensitivity in functional and organic gastrointestinal diseases
  • Immunomodulation of intestinal motility
  • Nutritional aspects of gastrointestinal diseases
  • Trials and use of new drugs: mesalazine for patients with irritable bowel syndrome; use of biological drugs for patients with Chrohn's Disease who have a reduced response to the TNF-alpha antibody; prucalopride for patients with chronic constipation
