Endocrinology and Diabetes Unit

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES

The Endocrinology and Diabetes Unit fulfils a clinical and healthcare role in the treatment of diabetes, thyroid diseases and other endocrine diseases.

 

The main services provided are:

  • Outpatient diagnostic examinations
  • Ultrasound and fine needle biopsy of the thyroid
  • Prevention and treatment of diabetes and chronic complications
  • Individual and group therapeutic education for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes
  • Prevention and treatment of obesity and metabolic syndrome (with group psychoeducation)

Its services are provided both under the Italian National Health Service as well as privately, on an outpatient and day-hospital basis. Patients with particularly complex clinical disorders (e.g. severe hypoglycaemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, etc.) are admitted for treatment.

 

All patients treated in the Unit have access to a direct dial telephone service and email facilities to enable them to communicate directly with health workers.

RESEARCH AREAS

  • Treatment of type 1 diabetes and LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes of adults) by early diagnosis and combination of genetic, immunological and mathematical techniques
  • TRIGR: an international study with hydrolysed milk to reduce the development of type 1 diabetes in high-risk neonates
  • Innovate and less invasive methods for the administration of insulin (e.g. oral sprays)
  • Use of adult adipose tissue stem cells for the regeneration of damaged tissues
  • Epidemiology and pathophysiology of obesity and diabetes
