Diagnostic Imaging Unit

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES

The Diagnostic Imaging Unit carries out exams such as conventional radiology (x-rays), ultrasonography (ultrasound), magnetic resonance and multisection computed tomography (CT), with morphological and perfusion evaluation of the body area examined. The department also uses minimally invasive interventional radiology techniques for the treatment of vascular and non-vascular diseases.

It specializes in the diagnostic study of all types of tumours, staging them and helping, in conjunction with percutaneous biopsy samples, to determine their level of aggressiveness. Working in collaboration with the specialist Medical Oncology Unit, it determines whether to refer patients for surgical or medical treatment, radiotherapy or a combination of these, with intra-arterial treatments or percutaneous excision.

The department is a reference centre for the diagnosis of breast problems and works with the Breast Care Unit to provide drop-in outpatient services which, whilst requiring a doctor’s referral, do not need an appointment to be made in advance. The services include mammography screening and the treatment of breast cancer, as well as advanced cardiovascular diagnosis. The Diagnostic Imaging works with the Cardiology and the Cardiac Surgery Units.

The Unit provides 24-hour cover by a specialist in emergency radiology and vascular procedures on day hospital basis:

  • Carotid stents
  • Aortic stents
  • Revascularization of lower limbs and lower limb salvage
  • Sclerotherapy for varicocele embolization
  • Uterine fibroid embolization
  • Embolization of primary and secondary liver tumours
  • Caval filters
  • Local fibrinolysis

Extravascular interventional radiology treatments:

  • Thermal ablation of hepatic, pulmonary, renal and bone lesions
  • Thyroid fine needle aspiration
  • Pulmonary, hepatic, renal and bone biopsies
  • Vertebroplasty
  • Urinary endoprosthesis/nephrostomy positioning
  • Biliary procedures (drainage and stents)
  • Cryoablation could be used in selected cases for bone, kidney, liver, lung and prostate cancer and pain palliation

RESEARCH AREA

  • Study of the major organs and systems by Perfusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (pMRI)
  • Functional evaluation of the pelvic floor
  • Early stage degeneration of intervertebral discs
  • Use of Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging for the early diagnosis of impairment of the major internal organs
  • Cardiological diagnosis by CT and magnetic resonance for tailored therapy
