Thoracic Surgery

The Thoracic Surgery Unit deals with the surgical treatment of all thoracic pathologies, neoplastic and non-neoplastic (lung, pleura, esophagus, thymus) and neck pathologies (thyroid, parathyroid, parotid). Specializing in the treatment of lung cancer, the unit opts for minimally invasive techniques in this particular field. All thoracic surgery is approached, where possible, with a Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Uniportal Surgery (VATS), using a 3-4 cm single incision. The use of a uniportal VATS approach results in a reduction in postoperative pain, postoperative hospitalization and an earlier return to work without leaving scars in the thoracic area.

The close co-operation with the Endocrinology and Diabetology department has meant that over the years a high number of thyroidectomies for neoplastic operations have been performed with a rate of complications typical to this surgery. The unit’s recurrent injury and postoperative hypocalcaemia rate is below 1%.

The Thoracic Surgery Unit works in close collaboration with the Vascular Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Endocrinology and Diabetology, Gerontology, Oncology and Oncology Radiation Units.
