Child Neuropsychiatric Unit


The Child and Adolescence Neuropsychiatry Unit offers a broad inter-disciplinary range of services for such conditions as:


  • Autism and pervasive developmental disorders.
  • Learning disabilities (dyslexia, dysorthography, dysgraphia and dyscalculia).
  • Speech and language disorders.
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), for which the Unit is regional reference center.
  • Intellectual disability.
  • Gender identity disorders.
  • Oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder.
  • Neurogenetic syndromes.
  • Mood disorders.
  • Sleep disorders.
  • Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders that onset in adolescence.
  • Eating disorders.
  • Personality disorders.

The multi-disciplinary team is composed by neuropsychiatrists, neuropsychologists, geneticists and biologists, who in turn work in collaboration with speech therapists and pediatricians.


The clinical services are available either privately or on the Italian National Health Service. It provides assistance at the Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico (Clinic in via Alvaro del Portillo, 5) and at the Centro Mafalda Luce per i Disturbi Pervasivi dello Sviluppo in Milan (via Rucellai, 36). The Child Neuropsychiatry Unit is also able to provide:


  • Primary neuropsychiatric diagnosis and follow-up.
  • In-depth clinical, instrumental and laboratory testing in cases that have already been diagnosed.
  • Neurogenetic tests, including: gene sequencing such as MECP2 (Rett Syndrome), PTEN (autism with macrocephaly and macrosomia), connexin 26 and 30 (congenital deafness); PARK2, PARK6 and PARK8 for Parkinson Disease.
  • Psychodiagnostic and neuropsychological testing for the assessment of executive functions, tests to determine intellectual levels, projective tests and diagnostic tests aimed at the classification of various neuropsychiatric conditions.
  • Therapeutic / rehabilitative activities.


Research is carried out in the laboratories of Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico, Rome and  Centro Mafalda Luce per i Dusturbi Pervasivi dello Sviluppo  in  Milan. The Unit is part of the European EU-AIMS project. Dr. Roberto Sacco’s team is particularly involved in the following areas of research:


  • Multi-centric research into the genetics of autism.
  • Detection of biomarkers for the early diagnosis of autistic disorder.
  • Gene-environment interactions in childhood neuropsychiatric disorders.
