Cardiac Surgery Unit

The Cardiac and Vascular Surgery Unit specializes in particular in the treatment of ischaemic heart disease (myocardial revascularization by bypass), mitral valve diseases with valve replacement or valvuloplasty (conservative procedure), and aortic valve diseases, with or without aneurysm, treated surgically by replacement with prosthetic valves or reconstructive surgery with valvuloplasty.

Thanks to modern techniques, the Unit is able to perform heart surgery on a beating heart, or without the assistance of extracorporeal circulation. Some surgical interventions are carried out using minimally-invasive techniques which avoid visible scarring in the chest area.

In the vascular field, the Unit adopts minimally-invasive and conservative techniques for the surgical and endovascular treatment of diabetic and peripheral arteriopathies involving the entire iliac-femoral-popliteal-tibial axis.

Abdominal aortic aneurisms are treated by means of traditional and endovascular surgical interventions and the use of endoprostheses.

The traditional surgical treatment of carotid lesions and lesions of the supra-aortic trunks have a complication rate of less than 2 percent and represents a point of excellence for the Unit.

Particular attention is paid to the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins, carried out by laser or conventional therapies, on both an inpatient and day-hospital basis.

The Unit also carries out surgical procedures for the treatment of:

  • Carotid stenosis (carotid endarterectomy)
  • Aneurysm of the abdominal aorta (aneurysmectomy and replacement with stents)
  • Aorta-iliac-femoral stenosis due to arterial disease (standard arterial and extra-anatomic bypass)
  • Cardiac tumours (excision of cardiac myxoma)
  • Congenital heart disease in adults (correction of interatrial and interventricular defects, patent ductus arteriosus and coarctation of the aorta)
  • Pericardial diseases (pericardial-pleural window, pericardiocentesis)
  • Bradyarrhythmias (insertion of percutaneous endocardial pacemakers)

It has the following general and specialist clinics:

  • Cardiac and vascular clinic
  • Clinic for patients with pacemakers
  • Spider vein treatment clinic

  • Tissue engineering and cell therapies aimed at the repair or replacement of cardiac and vascular tissues
  • Pharmacological effects on inflammatory mechanisms caused by cardiac surgery
  • Endothelial reactivity of tubes used for coronary bypass insertion

  • Cardiac and Molecular Biology Laboratory, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (USA)
  • Department of Cardiac Surgery, Navarra University, Pamplona (Spain)
  • Department of Biochemical Sciences, La Sapienza University of Rome
