Breast Care Unit

The Breast Care Unit diagnoses and treats pathologies of the breast, tumours in particular. It adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to its clinical activities that guarantee personalised diagnoses and therapies to patients. It works in collaboration with the Units of Diagnostic Imaging, Pathological Anatomy, Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery, Radiotherapy, Medical Oncology and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation together with the Clinical Nutrition Unit of the Gastroenterology Unit.

Clinical therapy is organised at a first diagnostic level that employs instrumental examinations (mammograms, echo Doppler, contrast-enhanced ultrasound, mammary magnetic resonance imaging with dedicated bobbin, elastosonography) and a second surgical level, which is reserved for patients presenting with suspected mammary neoplasias, with cytohistological tests carried out in day hospital or day surgery (stereotactic- or ultrasound-guided core biopsies, stereo-guided biopsies under local anaesthetic, fine needle aspiration, etc.).

The Unit adopts an oncoloplastic approach, that is to say one that favours conservative techniques that include the plastic contouring of the breast and efforts to spare the skin and the nipple-aureola complex. Sentinel lymph node biopsies are also carried out on a day surgery basis with a view to identifying the first lymph node(s) to which cancer cells are most likely to spread from a primary tumor.

It provides early diagnosis of breast neoplasias through programmes of periodic mammograms, and also operates a Walk-In Clinic. It operates under the Italian National Health Service, and whilst patients need to be referred by a doctor, there is no need to make an appointment in advance and the department is able to provide a same-day diagnosis.

The Breast Care Unit runs a Specialist Outpatients Clinic offering initial breast checks, ultrasounds and clinical diagnostics, as well as a post-operative surgical dressings service and a follow-up scheme for patients who have had operations.

  • New technologies for minimally invasive surgical treatment: first, sentinel lymph node-negative and second, biopsy of the axillary sentinel lymph node in local failures of post-mastectomy breast carcinoma and after conservative surgery
  • Protocols for one-week periods of treatment with accelerated partial breast irradiation using 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy
  • Innovation in Mammarian Radiotherapy protocol: breast carcinoma with a low risk of local failure
  • The study of stem cells in breast tumours with a view to developing new pharmacological treatments
  • Early treatment for cardiotoxicity from antitumour drugs
