How to collect samples of blood, faeces and urine

BLOOD

The collection is performed in the morning, after fasting for at least 6 hours.

 

URINE

Urine spot: urine collection is directly performed at the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital in containers provided for personnel of the Sample taking Centre, after the admission.

 

24-hours urine: 24-hours urine collection must be performed at home, using selected containers available on the market. Collection must begins starting from the second urine of the morning of the established day, continuing all day long. The last collection must be the first urine of the day following the beginning of the collection. During the 24 hours, the container should be kept in the refrigerator. The 24-hour urine are delivered on the same morning that ends the collection.

 

24 hour urine in an acidified container: collection of 24-hours urine in acidified containers must be performed at home, using selected containers available on the market that will be previously treated in Analysis laboratory. The container of the 24 hours urine must therefore be brought to the Sample taking Centre of Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital on the day before the collection. Personnel of laboratory provide for the acidification of container, that will be delivered the same morning at the Sample taking Centre. Collection must start from the second urine of the morning of established day, continuing all day long. The last collection must be the first urine of the day following the beginning of the collection. During the 24 hours the container must be kept in the refrigerator. 24-hours urine must be delivered on the same morning that ends the collection.

 

FAECES

Faecal Occult Blood: collection must be performed at home, in selected containers taken from the Sample taking Centre of Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital on the day before the beginning of collection. To assess the presence of faecal occult blood 3 consecutive samples of faeces (the same day or on different days) should be collected in 3 different containers to be kept in the refrigerator. Once finished the collection of the 3 samples, they must be brought all together to the Sample taking Centre.

 

Parasitological examination: collection must be performed at home in containers available on the market. For parasitological examination 3 consecutive samples of faeces (the same day or on different days) should be collected in 3 different containers to be kept in the refrigerator. Once finished the collection of the 3 samples, they must be brought all together to the Sample taking Centre.

 

Coproculture and HPSA (Helicobacter pylori Stool Antigen): collection must be performed at home in container available on the market. The sample must be preserved in the refrigerator before delivering it at the Sample taking Centre.
