Blood Transfusion Centre: blood donations

A great civic gesture

Giving blood is a great ethical and civic gesture, since it saves lives and improves the quality of life of those who are sick. Blood cannot be artificially produced and being able to ensure the availability of this unique resource in the treatment of many diseases and during complex surgical procedures depends entirely on the generosity of donors.

Who can donate?

Donors must meet the following legal requirements:

  • Be aged between 18 and 65 years of age
  • Weigh more than 50 kg
  • Must not have suffered from any serious illnesses
  • Must not be suffering from any chronic disease

When and where to donate

The Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital Blood Transfusion Centre welcomes donors from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30 am to 11:30 am. Donations should be given on an empty stomach, will take only a few minutes and are not injurious to the donor’s health. Approximately 450 ml of blood is taken during each donation session. It is drawn off using single-use disposable equipment.

The benefits of donating blood

Donating blood is also an opportunity to monitor your own health. The Blood Transfusion Centre carries out a thorough medical examination of each donor. The donated blood also undergoes 24 laboratory tests (full blood count, cholesterol, differential white cell count, etc.) and the results are mailed to the donor, with comments by the presiding doctor.
